FEBRUARY 2010
Ever been to LIGHT NIGHT? This year on February 12th & 13th, Nottingham is hosting its 3rd annual event, where the city centre buldings will be lit up, live music will play, laser beams will rake the sky, and happy families will take to the streets to enjoy the spectacle. Photographers too- in the form of 'friends of LINE+LIGHT', and as we mentioned in last month's bulletin, Martine will be by the reflecting pool in the Market Square from 5pm. If you can join her for some cracking dusk photography opportunities- bring your tripods and beer money too, as once we've taken some pics, we'll head for a quick drink before calling it a night. We're asking that you email Martine if you're going, because she'll keep an eye out for you before leaving the first location. Wrap up warm and see you there!
If you've looked through the course pages recently, you'll notice that we've now got a pretty full programme of courses going right through to the early part of 2011. We do recommend early booking- dates for June courses are already reserved, and of course some courses carry those early booking discounts. We've had to raise costs on a couple of our itineraries, but the majority of them have prices held right through the next season. take a look at Course dates 2010 for more information.
JANUARY 2010
A Happy New Year to all LINE+LIGHT people- we're planning an action packed 2010, with something for everyone, whether you're relatively new to photography, or you've owned a camera for years! The first 4 courses of the year are all sell-outs, and we're adding new dates all the time. We now have a FLICKR site up and running- two in fact- one for folk who've already been on courses and would like to share images they've taken on their days with us, and another for general images, of Nottingham, of your trips out, of whatever you'd like to show us.
We plan to start running a few social events too- the first being on the second part of LIGHT NIGHT- held in Nottingham city centre on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th February. We have Digtial stage 1 running all day on the Saturday, and plan to go down to the Market Square for around 5.30 to shoot dusk shots, see the light shows and have a drink or two. If you can make it- email Martine. Its also the opening day for Robert's second 'LANDSCAPE & BEYOND' show, and the gallery will be staying open late for the event. Sounds like it should be a good night......
DECEMBER 2009
Martine has just returned from an extraordinary trip to China, where her show is running in the major Ningbo Museum from November 26th-January 4th. Described as "much bigger and better than I could have possibly anticipated"; she was treated like a minor celebrity- appearing on local TV and radio interviewed at the opening! The museum had printed all 96 of the images she had supplied, together with the 12 competition winners' pictures (see October's bulletin for more info) and they were hanging in two large halls over several thousand square feet.

As seen here- Ninbgo Museum is a vast complex of exhibition halls, permanent galleries- and is the principal musuem for that part of Zhejiang province, where Ningbo is home to some 6 million people. Martine enjoyed several days there and as well as making speeches at the show's opening, she also undertook architectural photography work for The University of Nottingham, who have a campus there too. After leaving Ningbo, Martine spent the weekend in Shanghai, where she spent her birthday exploring the city before riding the Maglev (world's fastest train- 431kmh- yes truly!) back to the airport- and to reality.....
NOVEMBER 2009
A really exciting and busy month for Robert. Firstly, he was awarded the FENTON MEDAL by one of the largest and oldest photographic societies in the world- The Royal Photographic Society, which held its annual awards ceremony at The Royal Society in London. Twelve years ago, Robert played a major role in the formation of the Society's DIGITAL IMAGING GROUP, and helped establish it in the regions across the UK. He followed this up by introducing digitial photography and the tuition of Adobe Photoshop to many RPS members and the group is now the largest within the RPS. The FENTON MEDAL was awarded in recognition of this work, and he took the stage alongside other luminaries in the photo world- including Annie Leibovitz. Well done Robert!
Also in November, Robert also held his first public exhibition of personal work entitled 'LANDSCAPE & BEYOND' at the Society of Artists' gallery in Nottingham. This was a very popular event, and he sold many beautiful framed images which will doubtless be wrapped as Christmas gifts next month! Part two of this show will be in February 2010. Look here for more information soon...
OCTOBER 2009
We have now selected our twelve competition winnners, whose work will be going out to China with 96 of Martine's architectural images of Nottingham for the show NOTTINGHAM TO NINGBO - ONE CITY IN PHOTOGRAPHS this winter. Martine will be going out for the official opening- which is in the city of Ningbo on November 26th. She will report back on how she found the trip, together with some snaps of the exhibition in situ to show our talented photographers. Two principle winners, Eric Butler (see image below of The Dept of Chinese studies at the University of Nottingham) and Lewis Stainer (whose picture of Music in the Square is seen here) will be joining us on LINE+LIGHT days soon.

STOP PRESS! We're holding our first ever competition this autumn- in conjunction with Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery and Nottingham Evening Post, LINE+LIGHT is proud to be a sponsor for the competition which gives local photographers the opportunity to have their shots of the city exhibited in China!
On the 4th December 2009, a large exhibition of Martine's architectural images of Nottingham will go on show at Ningbo's prestigious new museum and art gallery. The show runs for a couple of months and is entitled NOTTINGHAM TO NINGBO- ONE CITY IN PHOTOGRAPHS. It will feature many of Martine's images from the 2006 book NOTTINGHAM TRANSFORMED, together with more recent shots of the city's new architecture and sights. The closing date is 9th October 2009, and more information about the competition, the prizes and requirements for entry can be found on our FEATURE COURSES page.

JULY 2009
Line and Light's first season has just finished, with the final course running on July 18th at the University of Nottingham in great weather. The biggest thing that we have noticed is the number of repeat bookings- we must be doing something right!
People who have done one classrom course come back for more, and those doing practical days out come back time and again for different itineraries, and the chance to polish up their skills. With this in mind, we're planning to expand the variety of courses on offer for the autumn/winter season, so watch this space!
MARCH 2009
Martine is a judge for this year's RIBA (Royal Institue of British Architects) 2009 Awards . She will be judging submitted buildings from Sheffield through to the Scottish Borders, the culmination of which will be the Stirling Prize in London in October. Shortlisting is in March with judging taking place in April. Martine is really excited about visiting top notch British architecture without having to worry about how to photograph it at the same time!
NOVEMBER 2008
Martine is one of the key speakers at this year's national SCALA conference, and is speaking to 300 architects about her work.
OCTOBER 2008
Martine won 'THE NOTTINGHAM CREATIVE BUSINESS AWARDS 2008' for her images of 'River Crescent', a luxury residential development in the city. This latest accolade for her work is one treasured by Martine, as even though her photographs are feted nationally, most of all, she prefers working locally and making images of her home city.
