Welcome to Line and Light

We are the midlands’ favourite school of photography with hundreds of happy photographers attending our one day courses every year.

Learn to use your camera or try new photographic skills in a fabulous location with top professionals to guide you throughout.

With beginners courses running in Nottingham, motor racing in Lincolnshire, Birds of Prey in Warwickshire and Portraiture in Derbyshire,
we’ve got exciting itineraries throughout the year for those just starting with their photography right through to skilled enthusiasts and semi-pro’s.
If you’ve a keen interest in buildings and architecture, you have the opportunity to learn with one of the UK’s top architectural photographers,
Martine Hamilton Knight d Litt (Hon), and if polishing up your post production skills is high on your list, our Adobe software tutors are second to none.

We are small, friendly, not a franchise and never will be. We look forward to meeting you soon!

May 2015 Newsletter

April was the sunniest month on record and May is now doing what April usually does and is throwing rain and strong winds at us! There's lots to see and photograph though, in what is often one of the most stunning seasons of the year colour-wise. We are doing our first motorsports course this month up at the beautiful Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, and our new Stage 3 digital course too.

April 2015 Newsletter

Hope you all managed to get successful Eclipse pics after last month's newsletter, I think the place to be was probably Derbyshire, where they had cloud AND sun, which created some lovely effects. The Line + Light team were shooting under a blue sky this side of the East Midlands, so good results, but less atmospheric than pics taken further west which came in from you.

March 2015 Newsletter

An Eclipse!! The last time we had one was in the days of analogue; I was shooting BT's new HQ in Runcorn that day and recall how odd the light was, viewing it through a set of welder's goggles as the contractors were still on site, working on the security gates. We all stood around watching and listening as the birds fell silent and the sky went a weird tobacco colour that was not quite sunset, nor proper night.

February 2015 Newsletter

2015 is shaping up to bring some exciting changes for Line+Light. We're in the process of revamping the website, as if any of you look at it currently using an i-phone or tablet, you'll notice that it's tricky to navigate compared to when viewing on a conventional computer screen with a mouse. This is because it was designed before mobile devices were introduced, where as today, many of us own them.

January 2015 Newsletter

Well 2015 already seems to be galloping along, we've seen a little snow, a lot of sun (for January) and some pretty frosts. All of these things are visually compelling for us photographers so I bet you've been clicking away with gusto.

December 2014 Newsletter

HO HO HO, Santa is packing his sleigh as we write, is he bringing you camera gear? Or perhaps a Line+Light voucher? We have just been reading about Canon's launch of a 50MB sensor DSLR body in 2015, so that pixel race between manufacturers is far from over. In fact, pixels are the theme of this month's newsletter, with a look at some clever software and a feature on Lightroom training.

November 2014 Newsletter

It's gone cold and crispy again, which means clear night skies this week and on that theme we have news of a really exciting new course for 2015 - Astrophotography! So if you fancy having a go at shooting the stars and planets this winter scroll down for more details. We've also got a little article about great apps for photographers.

Our last course before the summer break, and we were in Wollaton with a full house of Stage 2 photographers who had a blast with us, especially in the afternoon when we had an unexpected model come to join us!

Certainly there was lots of practice on apertures, shutter speed and ISO's, marrying the skills together for that 'golden triangle' of exposure. Today's sparkling weather means that hopefully everyone has managed to get out again and practice under blue skis and warm sunshine again. Keep it up people and we'll look forward to seeing you for the Stage 3 day in November. Book this week for a discount.....

3,200 showers will be looking like this up and down Britain round about now, although mostly Hull (I pity the housekeeping teams in Hull's hotels today, I really do!).

If you google #seaofhull and Spencer Tunick you will see what we got up to at 3am this morning in the name of art photography!

They promised 'a short time' but after 2 hours in the buff 3,200 people were very happy to get dressed. Mc Donald's was quite a sight as lots of smurfs went for a breakfast warm up. Incredible atmosphere and well done to Hull for a fantastic start to their 'City of Culture' crown in 2017 😊

What our photographers say

I’ve lost count of how many Line and Light Course I’ve been on over the last three years – most of them I would say – which tells you something about their enduring appeal!

The friendly, informal atmosphere and the chance to meet and talk to other like minded folks in an unhurried environment mean I always come home with some great images and some new friends.
