April was the sunniest month on record and May is now doing what April usually does and is throwing rain and strong winds at us! There's lots to see and photograph though, in what is often one of the most stunning seasons of the year colour-wise. We are doing our first motorsports course this month up at the beautiful Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire, and our new Stage 3 digital course too.

April 2015 Newsletter

Hope you all managed to get successful Eclipse pics after last month's newsletter, I think the place to be was probably Derbyshire, where they had cloud AND sun, which created some lovely effects. The Line + Light team were shooting under a blue sky this side of the East Midlands, so good results, but less atmospheric than pics taken further west which came in from you.

March 2015 Newsletter

An Eclipse!! The last time we had one was in the days of analogue; I was shooting BT's new HQ in Runcorn that day and recall how odd the light was, viewing it through a set of welder's goggles as the contractors were still on site, working on the security gates. We all stood around watching and listening as the birds fell silent and the sky went a weird tobacco colour that was not quite sunset, nor proper night.

2015 is shaping up to bring some exciting changes for Line+Light. We're in the process of revamping the website, as if any of you look at it currently using an i-phone or tablet, you'll notice that it's tricky to navigate compared to when viewing on a conventional computer screen with a mouse. This is because it was designed before mobile devices were introduced, where as today, many of us own them.

January 2015 Newsletter

Well 2015 already seems to be galloping along, we've seen a little snow, a lot of sun (for January) and some pretty frosts. All of these things are visually compelling for us photographers so I bet you've been clicking away with gusto.

December 2014 Newsletter

HO HO HO, Santa is packing his sleigh as we write, is he bringing you camera gear? Or perhaps a Line+Light voucher? We have just been reading about Canon's launch of a 50MB sensor DSLR body in 2015, so that pixel race between manufacturers is far from over. In fact, pixels are the theme of this month's newsletter, with a look at some clever software and a feature on Lightroom training.

November 2014 Newsletter

It's gone cold and crispy again, which means clear night skies this week and on that theme we have news of a really exciting new course for 2015 - Astrophotography! So if you fancy having a go at shooting the stars and planets this winter scroll down for more details. We've also got a little article about great apps for photographers.

We listened to you - and we are delghted to be returning to Lord Byron's home in Nottinghamshire this Christmas - join Line and Light on Friday 16th December 2016 for some wonderful photography.

After a break (three years this winter), we're looking forward to seeing the work of the stylists in creating their beautiful displays in the period interiors. Our day will take us right across the house, from the Great Hall to Byron's bedroom, the cloisters, the kitchens and the monastic spaces such as the Plantagenet room.

There are only 10 places, and two are already reserved, so if you fancy joining us, it is £99 and the mince pies are on us!

As I announced to the group yesterday morning, "it's a Martine sort of a day" and indeed it was, with fabulous blue skies throughout. Gorgeous Bromley delivered plenty of photo ops as ever, and the Council House Chamber was ours to capture too, indeed I even snapped Peter sitting down on the job, hee hee!

A lovely day was had by all, and seeing as there's another out there now, I need to gallop over to Peterborough for an architectural client. Byeee....

Walking past the fountains in the Market Square yesterday whilst with the Historic Buildings group, I had a little fun with a fast shutter speed. 1/2000th gets it!

Here are two images kindly taken by Georgina Foxwell from last weekend's Dig 1 of me strutting my stuff in the interests of ISO demonstrations, however, what these show isn't particularly that a high ISO stops the action, and increases noise, because we know this to be true....

No, what gets me, is that Georgina was shooting at 25,600 on her new Nikon D5600 and oh boy, I consider the result to be pretty jolly respectable. How quickly technology has advanced from the first days of Line and Light courses, when 1600 ISO was high and the results ghastly, regardless of sensor size!

What our photographers say

I’ve lost count of how many Line and Light Course I’ve been on over the last three years – most of them I would say – which tells you something about their enduring appeal!

The friendly, informal atmosphere and the chance to meet and talk to other like minded folks in an unhurried environment mean I always come home with some great images and some new friends.
