Martine Hamilton Knight D.Litt (Hon), ARPS

Author of Photography for Architects, Martine has specialised in architectural photography for over 30 years. Since 1990, she has run a successful business working for a variety of organisations including architects, construction companies, interior designers and advertising agencies. Her work has been published in many international books and journals and her folio can be seen at www.builtvision.co.uk

Career highlights include her book for Routledge on the business of Photography for Architects, and the images for two Pevsner Architectural Guides; Buildings of England: Nottinghamshire (2020) and Buildings of England: Staffordshire(2024) with Yale University Press. Further books include three on The University of Nottingham’s architecture, Nottingham Transformed about the city’s regeneration and multiple solo exhibitions, including a major show in Ningbo, China in 2009. The BBC featured her in their photography series ‘A Digital Picture of Britain’ shooting 20th Century ‘greats’, and she has been an assessor for several national competitions including the RIBA Awards.

In July 2012, Martine’s work was recognised by The University of Nottingham who granted her an honorary doctorate Honoris causa (Doctor of Letters).

In Summer 2013 Martine was asked to become a worldwide ambassador for architectural photography by the well known manufacturer Manfrotto. As a user of their professional gear for her entire working life, she had no hesitation in endorsing their brand. In summer 2015 Martine celebrated 25 years with an exhibition of her favourite work at Bromley House Library in Nottingham. A solo exhibition of over 90 of her images ran at Nottingham’s Lakeside Djanogly Gallery from April – August 2022.

Martine co-founded Line + Light in 2008, and anyone who has been to one of her courses will report that she is passionate about all types of architectural image making and is renowned for her enthusiastic, informal teaching style. Martine also lectures part time on the MA and BA (Hons) Photography course at Nottingham Trent University and is a qualified teacher for Higher Education, holding a Postgraduate Certificate of Academic Practice.

Martine is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society and is DBS cleared to work with children and vulnerable adults.
